Pro Bono
Our firm promotes the active engagement of all attorneys in pro bono endeavors, with the goal of fulfilling our duties as responsible global citizens and simultaneously enhancing both our personal and professional experiences.
Axinn’s pro bono work is focused on social justice, as well as a wide range of legal issues involving indigent artists, immigration/asylum matters, veterans’ affairs cases, discrimination claims, First Amendment excessive force cases, prisoner civil rights matters, matrimonial and child custody disputes for low-income women, and fair housing claims.
We are proud of the significant contribution Axinn lawyers make to their communities and encourage associates to invest in their development through pro bono service. Axinn considers pro bono hours during bonus determinations. In 2023, over 70% of Axinn attorneys participated in pro bono matters, producing approximately 6,200 hours of pro bono work – a significant contribution to our communities with a billable hour value of over $5 million. 25% of Axinn attorneys billed over 100 Pro Bono hours.
Partner Nicholas E.O. Gaglio serves on the board of the Volunteer Lawyers for the Arts (VLA), the leading legal aid and education organization dedicated to New York artists and its arts and cultural organizations. In addition, Partner Tiffany Rider was recently appointed to the board of the Washington Lawyers’ Committee for Civil Rights and Urban Affairs (WLC), which partners with community members and organizations on scores of cases to combat discrimination based on race, gender, disability, family size, history of criminal conviction, and more.
We are also proud to have been recognized by numerous organizations for our service. Axinn received an Outstanding Achievement Award from the WLC for our successful representation of a plaintiff in an excessive force matter.
Additionally, for multiple years, more than a dozen of our attorneys have qualified for Empire State Counsel® Program, Capital Pro Bono Honor Roll, and United States District Court for the District of Connecticut Pro Bono Honor Roll. These annual honors recognize those who make a significant commitment to pro bono work in New York, District of Columbia, and Connecticut respectively.
