Associates Sandhya Taneja, Danielle Irvine, Megan Dill, Nurhan Elgamil, Isabella Schwarze, and Cole Vick authored sections of the ABA International Law Section’s Year in Review for the Women’s Interest Network, with Sandhya also serving as the editor for the publication.
The review covers notable 2024 legal actions and developments in women’s representation in political leadership around the world, gender-based violence and discrimination, human trafficking, peace and security, and developments in International Criminal Courts and tribunals.
Notable international rulings include the ICC’s first ruling recognizing gender-based persecution as a crime against humanity in The Prosecutor v. Al Hassan, key ECHR cases on discrimination and violence against women, the EU’s Directive 2024/1385 criminalizing practices such as FGM, forced marriage, and cyber violence, and Sierra Leone’s Prohibition of Child Marriage Act imposing penalties on all who enable underage marriage.
The ABA Women’s Interest Network focuses on the advancement of legal rights and interests of women around the world through educational programs, teleconferences, policy initiatives, publications, communications, and outreach.
