New York State Attorney General’s Office Retains Axinn
January 1, 1999
The New York State Attorney General's Office retained Axinn to investigate and prosecute a monopolization claim against Service Corporation International (SCI), the largest operator of funeral homes in the world. Axinn, on behalf of New York's Attorney General, filed a complaint in the United States District Court in Manhattan alleging that SCI had monopolized the Jewish funeral home services market in Manhattan and in New York City through its acquisition of several previously independent Jewish funeral homes. Axinn negotiated a settlement with SCI pursuant to which SCI agreed to sell three funeral homes to independent operators and to reimburse the Attorney General's office for the cost of its investigation.
